Franklin D Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States of America wrote; “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little”. He died shortly before the end of WW2 in 1945, but the words he wrote are as true today as when they were originally penned.

In South Africa, we are faced with an even larger challenge in that the needs and plight of those less fortunate are literally right before our eyes and very often next to the road we take to work. Historically, the general trend and custom was to work hard and loyally during the course of your life, and then if you were successful, there may be scope for you to leave a bit of a charitable legacy in your will.

However, today many people are far more challenged by the needs that abound in the here and now, and wish to create a living legacy during the course of their lifetime. These folk have been dubbed the Modern Philanthropists and they are not necessarily the multi billionaires’ of our time. They are just extra ordinary folk who want to make a difference, whether it be by donating time, intellect, influence or money and refuse to just let life go by when the need is so great.

It is with this in mind and Franklin Roosevelt’s quote ringing in our ears that TomorrowToday have formed a foundation that can serve as the vehicle through which charitable bequests can be efficiently routed and channeled. The aim of the TomorrowToday Foundation is to accept donations, from individuals and organizations, both South African based and international, and to distribute these funds to needy grass roots causes and initiatives, mainly in the fields of education, medical, health and poverty relief.

The significant advantage in using the foundation is that South Africa donors can claim up to 10% of their taxable income as a tax deduction. In plain terms, this means that a R10,000 donation will only cost the donor R6,000! The TomorrowToday Foundation will issue donors with tax certificates allowing them to claim the deduction in the annual tax return. BEE certificates can also be issued to South African corporates. Foreign donations will also be very welcome and the foundation will be more than happy to work with foreign donors and if possible ensure that similar type tax advantages can be utilized.

We may never be able to solve all the world’s problems, economic variables and life’s inequalities. But we can make a difference in the lives of those people that life brings across our path and those people and organizations that the TomorrowToday Foundation touches. Only future generations will know and feel the impact of these small tokens of charity, yet the effect on the people touched may be profound, allowing them to have a fair chance of achieving their full potential and begin to positively influence tomorrow’s future, today.

The TomorrowToday web site has further information and administrative details as to how you can play a part in leaving a living legacy and not waiting until you die, to make a difference.
