I met a while ago with a journalist doing a feature on talent management. Having spent over an hour talking about what my company, TomorrowToday does, I was unsatisfied with my answer to one of her questions. She asked, “How can you know if someone is talented or not?” My answer was that it would be difficult to give a definitive answer, since each job, company and industry would have a slightly different definition. I gave some suggestions though about a generic definition for talent: an inquisitive mind, a willingness to challenge, entrepreneurial flair and creativity, self motivated, self-honest (by which I mean they know their strengths and weaknesses as well as their personality traits), hard-working, technology-savvy, and so on.
So, I wondered to myself, they must be people out there who’ve tried to do this as well — come up with a generic definition of what we’re looking for when we say we looking for talented people. A quick Google search found a few interesting sites:

- Use the interview process to look for those intangibles. We ask, “What motivates you? What do you want to accomplish in life?” A few people say, “I want a challenge. I want to join an elite team. I want to come out a better person.” That’s what we want to hear.

- They learn – especially from their mistakes
- The consequence is that talented people are often ‘difficult people’.

I still don’t think there is a generic definition of talent. But most people know it if they see it. And I am not sure that this is good enough. What do you think?
Maybe I have been watching too much cricket from Australia but this started me thinking about Ian Botham’s talent and how eventually it was ‘saved’ by Mike Brearley’s talent. There was no question that Botham was talented but should he have been promoted to captain? Was the same mistake made with Flintoff? No Brearley to save him.
By coincidence Mike Atherton produced an article in the Times on Thursday January 6 on this very subject. He says that in sport achievement is what matters not talent. (Is this true in business?) He reported that Anderson said that Cook was more talented than Pietersen which he considers to be shrewd because talent comes in many shapes and sizes so identifying what the talent is becomes crucial. Maybe Anderson wants reliability and delivery of the talent that is there. The best sales person may not be the best sales director but that person should not leave leave due to a structure that does not recognise and reward the talent. In the Pharmaceutical Industry the Research Director needs to harness massive talent amongst well qualified technicians on the ‘bench’ They have to deliver under his ‘Brearley’ management.
