Our team’s latest Strategic Foresight Alert (SFA) looks at a Grey Elephant reshaping the global economy – Migration.

Migration is no longer a fringe issue – it’s one of the hidden productivity/growth engines (and fault lines) of 21st-century prosperity.

Here’s some of what’s pinging on our team’s radar this month in our latest SFA…

➡️ Two-thirds of countries now have fertility rates below replacement. By 2050, the global worker-to-retiree ratio will collapse to just 2:1 in developed nations. As an example – Germany’s workforce alone is set to shrink by 25% by 2035.

➡️ The Math Doesn’t Work: To maintain economic momentum, Germany needs 800,000+ migrants annually. The UK needs at least 185,000 more per year above historic averages. Without sustained migration, GDP per capita in ageing economies could fall by $10,000.

➡️ Africa’s Youthquake: Emigration from Africa will reshape the world. By 2050, the region will add nearly 700 million new workers – the largest labour surge on the planet.

By 2035, one in every two new entrants to the global workforce will be African. With 94% of the continent living in countries below the $10,000 GDP per capita threshold –

where migration typically peaks – outbound pressure is not just rising, it’s locked in.

➡️ Climate Is a Catalyst: Up to 1 billion people could be displaced as climate shocks accelerate. Sea level rise, drought, and water stress – affecting over 5.7 billion annually by 2050. This will redraw migration corridors in real time.

➡️ The Great Contradiction: Public rhetoric remains hostile, even as economies depend on migrants to fill critical gaps. African talent is already reshaping care, health, and logistics workforces across the US and Europe – and the surge is just beginning.

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Global economic power is shifting: In this century, Firstwave nations will account for less than 20% of the global population. Sub-Saharan Africa alone will make up 34%. Migration is the mechanism through which this power transition will unfold, affecting everything from supply chains and military readiness to tech talent and political stability.

Immigration is now a structural economic necessity: Pension systems built for 4:1 support ratios are collapsing under a 2:1 reality. Without a surge in working-age populations, entire economic models begin to fray – from healthcare and housing to consumer demand and tax revenue.

The maths are non-negotiable: Even with productivity growth, labour shortages will deepen. Germany, UK, Japan, and others must either double immigration, radically overhaul retirement and labour systems, or accept long-term decline.

Climate will act as a force multiplier: As climate shocks push populations to move, migration won’t just be about opportunity – it will be about survival. Border policy, resilience planning, and talent pipelines will need to evolve fast, or governments risk systemic breakdowns in social cohesion and workforce viability.

STRATEGIC ACTIONS TO CONSIDER:

There’s a narrow window to lead or lag. Organisations that treat migration as a strategic lever – will unlock future talent, market growth, and resilience.

➡️ Build Talent Pipelines: Siemens partners with vocational schools in Egypt and Africa to train tech talent in mechatronics and automation – feeding both local demand and global mobility streams.

➡️ Deploy Smart Relocation Tech: Global firms use AI platforms (e.g. Gloat, Eightfold) to match migrant talent with roles in real time.

➡️ Influence Policy from the Inside: Canada’s EMPP links refugee resettlement to workforce gaps. Companies like Amazon and Tesla are lobbying for fast-track visas tied to green and high-demand skills.

➡️ Design products and services for Diaspora Demand: Nestlé reformulated 150+ products for African and Asian diasporas – driving double-digit growth in urban immigrant-heavy districts.

➡️ The Kairos Opportunity: By designing talent pipelines, influencing visa systems and creating products for a mobile world, demographic disruption isn’t a threat – it’s your next competitive edge.
