I have watched the Susan Boyle on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ video clip about 10 times today. It is very inspiring but it also makes me feel a little sad. She is 47 years old and does not appear to have tapped into her hidden talent until now. Better late than never, I suppose.
I wonder how many people are sitting on some hidden talent but have just not created the opportunity or been given the chance to express it? Ability is sometimes nothing without opportunity.
Author Henry Thoreau said that, ‘Most people lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with their song still in them.’
What is your song?
As Sir Ken Robinson wrote in his book – “The Element” – Page No. 190.
” Is it too late?
We all know people who feel locked into heir lives. They sincerely wish
they could do something more meaningful and fulfilling, but at age
thirty-nine or fifty-two or sixty-four, they feel that the opportunity has
passed.”
Susan is a good example that there is not too late find your Element.
But we need the Opportunity And Attitude.
There is a big question mark here: How we handle our talents? Everybody has talents. Talents are the most important assets in our organizations.
We are ALL talented but we have to find the right opportunity.
Why this need to ‘measure’ people? The perception that one needs to tap into their talent early and that there is something fundamentally wrong if you don’t. What about the option that some people mature later, like wine. That they get better as they get older and that sometimes ‘time’ is what is needed to refine and improve someone’s talent.
There is no generalised right or wrong time, just the right time for that specific person. How many people ignore their moment because we are told that there is a time limit on talent?
